THE ART OF TYING WITH ROPE…
…known in Japanese as Shibari or Kinbaku – is a fascinating bodywork practice that offers a broad spectrum of physical, mental and emotional experiences. Shibari has much in common with dance, yoga and meditation, and has both a performative and a touching aesthetic dimension. The person tying and the person being tied can shape their encounter in many different ways: through a trusting exploration of dominance and submission, through empathetic communication and mutual surrender, or through deep connection and intensity. An exciting and artistic form of bodywork that is well worth exploring!
At the SHIBARI BASICS – INTRO DAY by luhmen d’arc, we offer beginners an accessible and playful introduction, as well as a refresher for people who have already attended a beginner’s course and would like to revisit and consolidate their knowledge. The focus is on the fundamentals of Japanese-style rope bondage. We cover technical basics such as a Single Column Tie, general rope-handling and improvisation techniques and strategies, as well as several specific tying patterns and the principles behind their construction, helping participants to understand rope bondage not only practically, but conceptually.
Alongside technique, the course also focuses on experiencing the practice and exchange on it. Tying and being tied are explored through practical exercises, while shared discussion gives us the opportunity to explore questions such as: Why do we do this at all? What kinds of experiences are people seeking when they engage in this practice, with whom, and how do they want to experience them? And particularly importantly, the course includes an introduction to the aspects of safety, communication and consent, which play a wide-ranging – and sometimes highly complex – role in Shibari.
Singles, couples and all other constellations are welcome to register. We will switch roles, meaning that the exercises are repeated so that all participants experience both tying and being tied. Couples who do not wish to switch roles can remain in an agreed role distribution. Please let us know when registering if this applies to you.
This course is an ‘extended version’, two hours longer than usual. This gives us more space for technique and practice, more relaxed experimentation during open sessions, and more time simply to enjoy tying
